Founding Director
Neal Halfon, MD, MPH is a professor of pediatrics in the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, health policy and managementin the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, and public policy in the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs.He is also the founding director of the UCLA Center for Healthier Children Families and Communities, a campus wide multidisciplinary institute focused on transforming new and important ideas into innovative solutions that improve the lifelong health of children. For more than twodecadesDr. Halfon has been instrumental in advancing research, policy and systems innovations focused on the healthy development ofchildren at local, national and international level.This includes work on place based early childhood initiatives intheUS, like First 5 in Californiaand Brighter Futures in Connecticut,and similar effortsin theUK, Canada, and Australia.From 1996-2004 hedirected the federally funded National Center for Infancy and Early Childhood Health Policyand helped to design and launch the Maternal and Child Health Bureau’s, state Early Childhood Comprehensive System grants that provided funding and guidance for state level early childhood systems building efforts.Dr Halfonalsohelped launch and lead theTransforming Early Childhood Community Systems (TECCS) Initiative. TECCSis working with more than 70 communities across the US, as they attempt to launch data informed innovations that improve early childhood development and school readiness. The TECCS communities are collaboratingwith different local, state and national efforts to highlight the importance early childhood outcomes, and to focus more attention on cross sector approaches to achieving lasting gains. Dr. Halfon has also help to spearhead All Children Thrivea national movement to address the challenges to healthy development and to promote child wellbeing. Launched in 2019, ACT California will be working with cities interested in transforming outcomes for children and youth.Dr. Halfon served as a memberof the Board on Children, Youth and Families of the National Research Council and Institute of Medicine from 2001-2006.In 2006, the Academic Pediatric Association awarded Dr. Halfon its annual Research Award in recognition of his lifetime achievement inthe field of child health research. In 2017, Dr Halfon received the C Anderson Aldrich Award, for his contribution to the field of Child Development.
